ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Joliet Catholic Academy senior Jack Geissler completed a strong run in the Boys State Tennis Tournament as he won five of his first six matches before dropping a match Saturday in the consolation quarterfinals.
Geissler will continue his tennis career at Grand Valley State.
Plainfield Central’s DJ Colantone ended with a 4-2 mark, including a loss to Geissler. Lockport sophomore Lucas Randall, who had won his first three matches, lost in the fourth round of the championship bracket and in the sixth round of consolation, finishing with a 3-2 record.
The other area singles player to advance past Thursday in the three-day event was Romeoville senior Miguel Rayos del Sol. He lost in the fourth round of consolation and finished 3-2.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Cook wins: Lewis’ Amber Cook became the second Flyer to win a national championship this year as she captured the triple jump title at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Cook won with a school-record jump of 42-31⁄2. Cierra Pulliam (Romeoville) earned her second All-America award with a personal-best jump of 41-21⁄2.
USF nets six All-American honors: Garnering All-America recognition at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships were USF’s 4x800 relay of Catherine Crosson (Plainfield North), Lesley Lopez, Brooke Johnson and Ashlee Knott, which finished seventh (9:15.49); Isi Edeko, who went 11.86 meters in the triple jump en route to a fifth-place finish; and Raven Kelly (Romeoville), who finished 12th in the hammer throw at 13.55 meters.
