Those looking for some fuel during the Sugar Grove Public Library’s open skate will find it at the new Modest Coffee.
The Sugar Grove Public Library has a BMX Biker Demo by Matt Wilhelm at 11 a.m. June 4 that will be followed by an open skate from noon to 3 p.m. in the parking lot. There are other activities planned that day at the library, including a meet and greet with Modest Coffee, which will officially open the following week on June 9.
The coffee shop will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 4 for the library events.
“We’re going to offer some free food samples and coffee samples, so it’s a nice little kickoff for the summer that ties in with a busy day at the library,” said Jenni Contaldo, who will be running the coffee shop.
Contaldo has been extremely busy preparing for this new endeavor as this will be Modest Coffee’s first coffeehouse. Modest Coffee has been offering wholesale, single-bag orders and subscriptions for a number of years.
“I think because we’ve been so busy we haven’t had much time to sit down and get nervous wondering about opening,” Contaldo said. “Things are really coming together now, and we’ve been testing some recipes the past two weeks.”
In addition to drinks, Modest Coffee will have a variety of salads and sandwiches on its menu. It is also working on having ice cream regularly available, but is still working on finding a vendor, so ice cream probably will not arrive until later this summer.
Even though kids will be out of school for the summer when Modest Coffee opens, Contaldo still expects plenty of business, maybe even more in the summer than during the busy school year.
“For me at least, I feel as a family we don’t get to go to the library very much during the school year,” she said. “A lot of people really enjoy going during the summertime, so we’re looking forward to meeting a lot of families.”
What will make Modest Coffee unique compared with the previous coffeehouse, Java Plus, is Contaldo will have retail items for sale.
“We’re working on that and we’ll have a bulk of retail items for sale,” she said.
Contaldo said she expects to sell local jewelry, pottery, body products and children’s toys.
“There will be a good variety of gifts for birthdays and [holidays] so rather than making the drive to Target, you can just come here,” she said.
Modest Coffee also will have some coffee and tea brewing equipment items for sale.
The coffeehouse will officially open at 10 a.m. June 9.
