High school sports roundup: Wheaton Warrenville South takes home volleyball invite title

Falcons, Tigers earn berths for girls state track meet

Wheaton Warrenville South’s boys volleyball team topped Brother Rice in the championship match of the Richards invite May 14 to bring home the title. The Tigers won all five tourney matches in two games.

Zack Meyer was named tournament MVP and Alex Carr was part of the all-tournament team.

The Tigers earned the No. 2 seed in the Glenbard West sectional and start postseason play at 5:30 p.m. May 24.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

St. Francis

The Spartans’ 4x200-meter relay won in 1:47.68 at the Class 2A Lisle sectional May 12 to earn a spot at the state meet, which begins May 20 at Eastern Illinois University.

Wheaton Academy

Karyn Best won the 200-meter dash in 26.46 seconds at the Class 2A Lisle sectional May 12 to earn a state berth. Emily Norbeck was second in shot put (32 feet, 8 inches) to also reach state.

Wheaton North

Three Falcons earned state meet berths at the Class 3A Lake Park sectional May 13. Shea Brown (38 feet, 1 inch in shot put) and Micah Brady (10-3 in pole vault) placed fifth and Naomi Noyes was sixth in the 800-meter run (2:18.75) to reach the state meet.

Wheaton Warrenville South

The distance events were kind to the Tigers at the Class 3A Lake Park sectional May 13 as Allison McGrath (fourth in the 3,200-meter run, 10:57.50) and Sara Atkins (fifth in the 1,600 run, 5:07.26) both made it to the state meet.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

Wheaton North 

Alex Bienduga won the 200-meter dash in 22.48 seconds and anchored Peyo Parker, Devonta Bryant and Chico Jackson on the winning 4x200 relay (1:30.21) at the DuPage Valley Conference meet May 13. Dan Webber (171 feet, 11 inches in discus), David Bradley (13-7 in pole vault) and Adam Terrini (49.08 in the 400 dash) had runner-up finishes for the Falcons.

Wheaton Warrenville South

Joe Zubak won the 300-meter hurdles in 39.24 seconds and was joined by Kyle Thompson, Baye Cooper and Brandon Bell on the winning 4x400 relay (3:24.65) at the DuPage Valley Conference meet May 13.

Blaze Barista won the triple jump with a mark of 44 feet, 9.5 inches, and Tom Ansiel took the pole vault crown after clearing 14-1. Erik Stubner had second-place finishes in high jump (6-3), the 100 (11.11) and the 200 (22.57).

BADMINTON

Wheaton Warrenville South

Julianna Rylko won twice in the main draw and twice in the backdraw to reach the consolation quarterfinals at the state tournament. The doubles teams of Emi Hockett and Cassidy Coe and Morgan Gagnon and Hannah Kearney both had 2-2 records as the Tigers tied for 13th place as a team.
