High school sports roundup: Downers Grove North, Downers Grove South have multiple girls state track entries

Shaliyah Dixon-Tucker, Michaela Hackbarth and Maddie Manganiello were event champions for the Downers Grove South's girls track and field team at the Class 3A Lockport sectional meet on May 12 as a slew of DGS athletes advanced to the state meet.

Hackbarth won both the 400-meter dash (57.90 seconds) and the 800 run (2:12.19), the latter the event in which she is the defending state champ.

Manganiello won long jump (18 feet, 8.25 inches) and Dixon-Tucker won the 100 hurdles (14.23). Dixon-Tucker also earned state berths in the 100 dash (seconds, 12.05) and 200 dash (third, 25.55), and she anchored Nicole Muccianti, Soren Umali and Ariana Finley on the state-bound 4x100 relay (second, 48.75).

Muccianti added a state berth in the 100 dash (fifth, 12.56) and Katie Stapleton qualified in the 3,200 run (11:26.62).

The state meet takes place May 20 and 21 at Eastern Illinois University.

BADMINTON

Downers Grove North

Annie Bedalov and Natalie White teamed up to win a pair of matches in the main draw of the doubles bracket at the state tournament as they went 2-2 at the meet. Maggie Tierney won once in the in the singles main draw and once in the backdraw to also go 2-2 at state.

Downers Grove South

After dropping her opening match in singles play at the state tournament, Susan Zhou won her next four matches to advance to the fifth round of consolation play.

Kirsten Gard and Katie Rock played two matches in the doubles bracket at state.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

Benet

The Redwings earned 12 state berths and took home the team title from the Class 2A Lisle sectional on May 12.

Emma Jones (17 feet, 7.5 inches in long jump) and Ali Munson (12-8 in pole vault) were sectional champions, and Jones added state berths in the 100-meter hurdles (seconds, 14.93 seconds) and 300 hurdles (third, 45.71). Munson was a state qualifier in the long jump (fourth, 17-3).

Anna Brunk (pole vault, 9-1), Kerry Steed (high jump, 5-1), Lucy Zimmerman (triple jump, 34-2.25), Amanda DeSitter (3,200 run, 11:26.34), the 4x400 relay (4:10.58) and the 4x800 (9:54.35) were second, and Clare McCabe made it to state in the 3,200 run (fourth, 11:35.96).

Downers Grove North

Isabel Maletich won triple jump (37 feet, 8.5 inches) and Jaida Green won high jump (5-5) at the Class 3A Lockport sectional meet on May 12 to earn berths to the state meet on May 20 and 21.

Emma Moravec took second in the 800-meter run (2:16.04) and the 4x800 relay team comprised of Kaitlyn Bonfield, Gina Kowalewicz, Emma Featherstone and Grace Maletich took second in 9:33.59 to make it to state.

Lisle

Edoise Omoike won the 100-meter dash (13.13 seconds) and the 400 dash (59.95) and took second in the 200 dash (26.73) at the Lions own Class 2A sectional on May 12 to earn state meet berths in each event.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

Downers Grove North

Robbie Prescott clocked a time of 9:10.41 and won a hotly-contested 3,200-meter run at the West Suburban Silver meet North hosted on May 13. Prescott finished .92 seconds ahead of the runner-up as four runners clocked times under 9:20.0.

Downers Grove South

Nick Mitchell won the discus (151 feet, 11 inches), Ben Jung won long jump (23-7) and Jung ran the lead leg ahead of Sam Adank, Juankeem Finley and Adam Gray on the winning 4x100-meter relay (1:31.68) at the West Suburban Gold meet on May 12.

BASEBALL

Downers Grove North

James Krick was 2-for-3 with a run and RBI, and David Giuliano and Brendan Shanahan each scored a run as the Trojans fell 7-3 against Lyons Township on May 16.

Downers Grove South

Nick Stacey doubled and drove in a run, Mike Hall had an RBI and Ben Ficht and Jack Villa each scored a run, but it wasn't enough for the Mustangs in a 3-2 loss against Willowbrook on May 16.

Zach Jones struck out 13 batters and allowed just two hits in a 4-0 win against Willowbrook on May 13, while Ty McCulloch allowed just three hits and an unearned run in a 2-1 win against the Warriors on May 14.

Lisle

Alec Van Volkenburg pitched a complete game one-hitter and Drew English doubled home Christian Grego (double) in the Lions' 1-0 win against Sandwich on May 14.

Lisle, a No. 3 playoff seed, hosts No. 6 Christ the King in a semifinal at the Class 2A Timothy Christian regional at 4 p.m. on May 18.

GIRLS SOCCER

Benet

Betsy Keefe scored on Maddie Becker's assist in a 2-1 loss against Hinsdale Central on May 12. The Redwings face Lockport at 6 p.m. on May 18 in a semifinal of the Class 3A Bolingbrook regional.

Downers Grove North

Leigh Wesolowski scored the game-opening goal and shared goalkeeping duties with Grace Stevenson in the Trojans' 5-0 win against Hinsdale South in the season finale on May 12.

Bridget Keys scored twice and Haley Reynolds and Abby Swanson added a goal each as North improved to 13-6-1 on the season ahead of the postseason opener on May 17.

Downers Grove South

The Mustangs defeated York 2-1 in the season finale on May 12 before opening the postseason against Proviso West on May 12.

Westmont

The Sentinels knocked off No. 1 seed Rosary 3-2 in a Class 1A regional semifinal on May 11, and they didn't stop there.

Facing a Montini team that beat them 2-0 in the season opener in the May 13 regional championship match, the Sentinels captured their second regional title in as many seasons with a 2-1 penalty kick win.

Kerry Slaga, Julia Siroky, Brenna Kapusta and Lily Lalonde converted on Westmont's first four penalty kicks, and Hannah O'Malley stopped Montini's first attempt.

Slaga scored soon after halftime to give Westmont a 1-0 lead before the Broncos scored midway through the second half.

Westmont improved to 11-7 with the regional final win and was scheduled to face Phoenix Military Academy in a sectional semifinal on May 17.

SOFTBALL

Downers Grove North

The Trojans gave highly-regarded Oak Park-River Forest a stiff test before falling 2-1 on May 16. OPRF scored in the bottom of the seventh for the win. Jaclyn Pasakarnis drove in Katie Polaski with North's run in the top of the fourth.

Downers Grove South

The Mustangs swept a doubleheader against New Trier on May 14, winning 3-0 and 17-3 on senior day.

Caroline Hedgcock pitched a two-hit shutout and Lindsey Hermann drove in two runs in the 3-0 win.

Hermann hit a grand slam, Hedgcock homered twice, and Nicole Bowman, Morgan Meyer and Megan LoBianco each homered in the second game as South improved to 25-3 on the season.
