Westmont’s girls track and field team dominated the Class 1A Marshall sectional May 13 to the tune of seven event wins, 11 state meet entries and the first team sectional title in program history.
Annie Carlson won four events at the sectional, topping the field in the 100-meter hurdles (15.95 seconds), 300 hurdles (46.15), triple jump (35 feet, 11.5 inches) and long jump (17-1).
Kayla Weatherly won the shot put (36-3), Morgan Fukar cleared 6-6 to win pole vault, and the 4x800 relay team of Peyton Nash, Frankie Fabry, Lily Arndt and Halle Nash won with a time of 10:30.11.
Weatherly picked up another state meet berth in the discus, finishing second with a mark of 102-6. Halle Nash made it to state in the 800 run (second, 2:36.07), Saleena El-Zakhem made it in pole vault (second, 5-0) and the 4x400 relay of Halle Nash, Peyton Nash, Fabry and Alicia Orozco booked a state berth (second, 4:37.40).
Carlson is a top-5 seed at state in both jumps and the 300 hurdles. The state meet starts with preliminary heats May 19 and concludes with finals May 21 at Eastern Illinois University.
GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD
Downers Grove North
Isabel Maletich won triple jump (37 feet, 8.5 inches) and Jaida Green won high jump (5-5) at the Class 3A Lockport sectional May 12 to earn berths to the state meet May 20 and 21.
Emma Moravec took second in the 800-meter run (2:16.04) and the 4x800 relay team of Kaitlyn Bonfield, Gina Kowalewicz, Emma Featherstone and Grace Maletich took second in 9:33.59 to make it to state.
GIRLS SOCCER
Westmont
The Sentinels knocked off No. 1 seed Rosary 3-2 in a Class 1A regional semifinal May 11, and they didn’t stop there.
Facing a Montini team that beat them 2-0 in the season opener in the May 13 regional championship match, the Sentinels captured their second regional title in as many seasons with a 2-1 penalty kick win.
Kerry Slaga, Julia Siroky, Brenna Kapusta and Lily Lalonde converted on Westmont’s first four penalty kicks, and Hannah O’Malley stopped Montini’s first attempt. Slaga scored soon after halftime to give Westmont a 1-0 lead before the Broncos scored midway through the second half.
Westmont improved to 11-7 with the regional final win and was scheduled to face Phoenix Military Academy in a sectional semifinal May 17.
BADMINTON
Downers Grove North
Annie Bedalov and Natalie White teamed up to win a pair of matches in the main draw of the doubles bracket at the state tournament as they went 2-2 at the meet. Maggie Tierney won once in the singles main draw and once in the backdraw to also go 2-2 at state.
