High school sports roundup: Lyons Township girls track wins sectional, send 13 to state meet

Lyons Township’s girls track and field team earned 13 state meet berths and took home the title at its own Class 3A sectional meet May 13.

Vanessa Flaherty won both the 800-meter run (2:16.39) and the 1,600 run (5:08.54), and Sarah Barcelona clocked a 10:53.75 to win the 3,200 run as LT swept the distance event titles.

Maryna Hoskins (48.59 seconds in the 300 hurdles), Charlise Domabyl (5 feet, 3 inches in high jump), Julia Cozzi (9-0 in pole vault) and the 4x800 relay (9:43.95) were also sectional champions for the Lions. Domabyl (35-0.75 in triple jump), Emily Henkel (11:07.83 in the 3,200 run), Emma Fink (5-1 in high jump) and the 4x400 relay (4:03.41) were second to earn spots at state, and the 4x200 relay earned a state berth with a third-place time of 1:44.57.

The state meet begins May 20 with preliminary heats at Eastern Illinois University.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

Lyons Township

Antwan Thigpen won twice as Lyons Township’s boys track and field team took seven event titles at the West Suburban Silver meet May 13.

Thigpen won the 100-meter dash (10.89 seconds) and the 400 dash (49.58), and Vince Zona (4:17.32 in the 1,600 run) and Jakob Mogorovic (40.01 in the 300 hurdles) also were champions on the track.

Nick Tegtmeier (51 feet, 4 inches in shot put), Blake Newsome (143-3 in discus) and Rob Hatch (21 feet in the long jump) were also winners for the Lions.

Cavase Rutherford (43-1.5 in the triple jump), Austin Iturralde (13-7 in pole vault), Andrew Hubona (138-4 in discus), the 4x400 relay (3:23.8) and the 4x800 relay (7:45.80) had runner-up showings.

LT will go for state meet berths when it competes at the Class 3A Morton sectional May 20.

BOYS WATER POLO

Lyons Township

The Lions will have the chance to defend their 2015 state title after topping Lindblom (17-1), St. Rita (18-5) and Brother Rice (14-7) in the championship match May 14 to win the title at their own sectional tournament.

Sam Szczepaniak (181 goals), George Lundgren (94 goals, 45 assists), Nick Rosenberg (254 saves) and Co. will face Stevenson, the team LT topped in last year’s championship match, in a quarterfinal at Stevenson at 5:45 p.m. May 19. The semifinals and trophy matches are scheduled for May 21.

GIRLS WATER POLO

Lyons Township

The Lions defeated Lindblom 17-0 and Richards 14-9 to reach the championship match of their own sectional tournament, but Mother McAuley ended the playoff run with an 11-2 win in the sectional final May 14.

Maddie Cordell scored both goals, Annika Moore added an assist and Maddie Janik made eight saves in net against McAuley. Cordell, Moore and Kaysie Stuba scored three times, Claudia Lundgren scored twice and Greta Markey, Olivia Land and Lauren Trail had one goal each against Richards.

BADMINTON

Lyons Township

Gwen Grodek and Carly Reimer won a doubles bracket backdraw match against Glenbard North’s Carolina Abella and Rameela Masghati as they went 1-2 at the state tournament.

Lauren De La Rosa was 0-2 in singles play at state.
