IDAHO FALLS, Idaho – Joliet’s Francis “Rudy” Ruettiger set three world records and won the Most Valuable Lifter award at the recent AAPF National Powerlifting Championships.
Competing in the 181-pound class in the 60-64 age group, Ruettiger, owner of Rudy’s Gym, won his division and set the records in the squat with 630 pounds, the bench press with 360 and total lift with 1,441. His other lift was 451 in the dead lift, which he also won.
Bolingbrook police officer Dale Szymanski represented Rudy’s Gym in the APF National Championships in Chicago and finished first in the bench press with 473 pounds. He competed in the 275-pound class in the 45-49 age group.
HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL
Joliet Catholic 9, Nazareth 2: Reilly Jo Swanson and Gillian Mantia both had a triple and three RBIs to lead the Angels (14-6, 4-2) to the East Suburban Catholic win. Alyssa Callans fanned nine and allowed four hits.
Lincoln-Way West 9, Lincoln-Way Central 0: Amanda Ruskowsky fanned 12 to pick up the shutout win for the Warriors (18-6, 9-1) in the SouthWest Suburban Red win over the Knights (9-13, 4-6). Anna Perry went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Tiffany Buis was 2 for 4.
Morris 3, LaSalle-Peru 1: Abby Burns tossed a four-hitter while striking out four. Emily Moore, Ryan Friend and Burns had two hits each.
Montini 9, Providence 6: Montini got a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth. Taylor Young went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a homer and Shannon Smith had two RBIs for the Celtics (21-4, 13-2). Kendal Judge (11-2) fanned seven and allowed six hits in the loss.
TF South 6, Lemont 2: Dani Stecyna (RBI) and Sam Galinski (3B, run) both went 2 for 4 for Lemont (7-11, 7-7) in the South Suburban loss.
HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL
Illinois Lutheran 2, Gardner-South Wilmington 0: The Panthers are now 9-11, 6-4.
GIRLS SOCCER
Lockport 3, Reavis 0: Brooke Haneczek scored a goal and picked up two assists to lead the Porters (14-6-1) to the nonconference win. Lauren Pikulski and Stephanie Barrientos each added a goal.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
D2CCA All-Region: The Division II Conference Commissioners Association announced that Lewis’ Jenna Cairo has been selected to the All-Midwest Region Softball First Team and is now eligible for All-America consideration on the national ballot. Cairo is ranked first in the Great Lakes Valley Conference in hits (75), second in batting average (.439), third in on-base percentage (.487) and doubles (17), sixth in runs (42), eighth in total bases (106) and ninth in slugging percentage (.620).
CoSIDA Academic All-District: St. Francis’ Sara Braden was selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America College Division Academic All-District Softball Team.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Mampe All-CCAC: St. Francis’ Kevin Mampe, a Lincoln-Way Central graduate, was selected to the All-Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Mampe started 27 games at shortstop, 13 at second base and 12 as a pitcher. He has a team-high .356 batting average with a pair of homers and 36 RBIs in 56 games. In regular-season play, he tied for third in the CCAC in hits (69) and ranked seventh in runs scored (43) and 10th in total bases (87). As a pitcher, he posted a 5-4 record with a 4.24 earned run average. In seven conference starts, he was 4-3 with a 3.30 ERA.
