GENEVA – Mitchell Merges may have struck out nine batters over five innings of work to pick up his fifth win of the season April 30, but the win was much more of a memorable one for coach Matt Hahn.
The Geneva baseball team's 11-1 victory over East Aurora was career victory No. 250 for the 12th year head coach.
AJ Hostman was 2 for 2, while Vince Pray doubled and drove in two runs for Geneva (16-6). Senior third baseman Jack Wassel also drove in two runs for the Vikings.
Geneva will begin a three-game, Upstate Eight Conference River Division series with Batavia at 4:30 p.m. on May 3, hosting the opener.
St. Charles North 6, West Chicago 2: At St. Charles, Luke Corcoran went 2 for 2 with a double and drove in two runs to help St. Charles North shake off its first conference defeat. John LeGare and Zach Fick also drove in runs for 17-3 North.
St. Charles East 5, West Aurora 2 (5 inn.): At St. Charles, Kyle Tiltges had two hits and drove in two runs to pace St. Charles East. Corbin Marucco (two hits) and Austin Gift (double, RBI) also helped the Saints (15-6) offense back starting pitcher Shawn Ligocki.
Burlington Central 13, Belvidere North 3 (5 inn.): At Burlington, Clay Milas struck out six over five innings to pick up the nonconference win for 13-7 Burlington Central.
Dakota Sciabaras went 2 for 3 and drove in three runs for the Rockets.
GIRLS SOCCER
Tournament of Champions: At Burlington, Iowa, St. Charles North finished the tournament with a 1-1-1 record after a 3-3 draw with Visitation Academy (St. Louis). The North Stars are now 10-3-1 this season.
Batavia fell to Collinsville, 2-1, in its first match of the day, and has its third-place match in the Great River Medical bracket against Middleton (Wisconsin) canceled due to rain. The Bulldogs sit at 12-3 this season.
Batavia and North will square off as part of Tri-Cities Night at 7 p.m. May 3 at Geneva.
Palatine 2, Burlington Central 0: At Naperville, Burlington Central finished the Naperville North Invitational with a loss to Palatine. Abbi Ciganek made 11 saves for the Rockets (14-6).
BOYS WATER POLO
St. Charles North Tournament: At St. Charles, St. Charles North finished the day 3-0 to win the St. Charles North Tournament. The North Stars beat Wheeling (12-8), Metea Valley (7-3) and Bradley (6-3) in the championship game.
Nathan Bawolek led North with nine goals in the tournament, while also contributing three assists. Sam Lilly (six goals, five assists), Jack Williams (four goals, five assists) and John Quinn (five goals, one assist) also helped pace the North Stars' attack.
Garrett Allamian finished the day with 22 total saves in goal.
BOYS LACROSSE
Batavia 11, Downers Grove South 10 (OT): At Downers Grove, Batavia improved to 7-4 with an overtime victory.
