Fifty years ago, Tom Anderson first prepared Colonial Cafe’s famous Turtle Sundae. It’s been such a popular addition to the menu that each April Colonial celebrates the anniversary of its creation. As part of the festivities, each Tuesday in April, seven lucky customers (one per location) have the chance to win their height in Turtle Sundaes! There are 28 winners in all!
The April contest has become a Colonial Cafe tradition that customers look forward to each year. Guests enter the contest inside the cafe, and include their height on the entry form. Heights are rounded to the nearest 6” interval, which is the height of the Turtle Sundae. So if you’re a winner, and you’re 5’4” tall, you’d win 11 free Turtle Sundae certificates. Winners can share the gift certificates with friends and family, or they can choose to treat themselves throughout the year!
“I was excited to come up with this tasty, classic combination of ingredients,” said Tom Anderson, Chairman and Director of Scooping Fun for Colonial Cafe. “We combine butter-roasted pecans, butterscotch caramel, and hot fudge chocolate, all over Colonial ice cream, and more smaller pecan pieces on top to spread the goodness over the fudge. When I make it, I don’t even add whipped cream so that it keeps the look of a “turtle candy”. No need to get sidetracked with whipped cream.”
According to Mr. Anderson, the Turtle Sundae, with all three sizes considered, has been their most popular sundae of all. “Over the years, I’ve tried different sundae combinations using ingredients like potato chips and popcorn,” he said. “They’re always popular, but none have been as popular as the Turtle Sundae.”
Be sure to visit your local Colonial Cafe in April to enter this special 50th Anniversary contest. Imagine winning your height in Turtle Sundaes! What a fun way to celebrate an anniversary!
