LAKE COUNTY – Gloria Charland won Tuesday's Democratic nomination in the race for Lake County Board District 5 while Judy Martini got the Republican nod.

According to unofficial results with all precincts reporting, Judy Martini (R-Fox Lake) received 1,906 votes (48 percent); David A. Zipp (R-Ingleside) received 1,377 votes (35 percent); and Denise Rotheimer (R-Ingleside) received 663 votes (17 percent).

On the Democratic ballot, Gloria Charland (D-Ingleside) won with 2,445 votes (76 percent) and Roger T. Smith, Sr. (D-Fox Lake) received 783 votes (24 percent).

The candidates are seeking to replace longtime Lake County Board member Bonnie Thomson Carter (1996-present), a Republican who is not seeking re-election.

Charland said her platform is “honest and ethical government.” She said she would like to work for a more transparent government that is in contact with constituents.

“I think our biggest issue to voters is property taxes,” Charland said. “I want to guard against wasteful spending.”

Martini is a former Lake County Board member who said she would like to encourage business startups and wage growth.

“The biggest issue Lake County faces this year is economic development," Martini said. “Lake County has an educated work force and we should have wage growth to keep employees here.”

District 5 covers Fox Lake, Lakemoor, Volo, portions of Round Lake, the unincorporated areas of Grant Township, and portions of Wauconda, Avon, Antioch and Lake Villa.
