Bolingbrook police investigating fatal shooting, fatal crash

BOLINGBROOK – Police are investigating if there is any connection between a deadly shooting Saturday night in Bolingbrook and a fatal crash earlier last week.

Bolingbrook Police Lt. Carter Larry confirmed Juantrelle Quarles Jr., 21, of Bolingbrook, and another man attended the funeral of Reginald Johnson on Saturday in Summit. About 7:12 p.m., Quarles and the other man were outside a residence in the 100 block of Cypress Drive in Bolingbrook when they were struck by gunfire.

Quarles was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene. The other man, who is either 20 or 21, was hospitalized in critical condition with wounds to his abdomen, but is expected to survive, Larry said.

Authorities said there was a large gathering at the house of friends who'd been to Johnson's funeral earlier that day.

"Apparently, a dispute erupted, resulting in gunfire," authorities stated in a news release issued Saturday.

Early Feb. 1, Johnson, 19, was the rear passenger in a Pontiac that struck a tree at Edgehill and Glengary drives in Bolingbrook – two blocks from where the shooting occurred.

"A witness on scene [said] he observed the vehicle traveling westbound on Edgehill at a very high rate of speed, losing control and striking a tree," Larry said.

Aubry Watson, 30, of Bolingbrook was identified as the driver and hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, according to police reports. Johnson, of Bolingbrook, and Maurice Thomas, who'd been riding in the passenger seat, were taken to a hospital in DuPage County where Johnson was pronounced dead at 7:45 a.m.

On Friday, Watson was charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a suspended license. Larry said Monday that Watson remains hospitalized and will be arrested when he is released.
