Burlington Central announces Athletic HOF inductees

BURLINGTON – The Burlington Central High School Athletic Hall of Fame recently announced its 2016 inductees, a group that will gain enshrinement at 6 p.m. April 10 at Elgin Community College.

Here’s a look at the inductees:

• Shane Burke: A 2010 graduate, Burke was a four-time sectional wrestling qualifier, a state qualifier and holds the program’s career record for wins with 127. He was also a two-time national qualifier as a member of Team Illinois.

• Josh Gminski: A 2005 graduate, Gminski was a multi-sport standout. He played football all four years, helping the Rockets to a 32-10 record and four-straight playoff appearances. He was also a two-time state qualifier in wrestling as well as a state track qualifier in the shot put. Gminski later played football at Air Force.

• Stephanie Holthus: Holthus led the Rockets girls volleyball team to a Class 3A state runner-up finish in 2008, her junior year. She later starred at Northwestern, where she became the Wildcats’ all-time kills leader (1,797) and was named all-Big Ten three straight times. She was also a two-time member of the U.S. Junior National team.

• Austin Jarvis: A 2010 graduate, Jarvis was the catcher on Central baseball’s 2009 sectional finalist team and led the team to a 32-3 record in 2010. He ranks first on the school’s all-time triples list and is second in career batting average, hits, doubles, home runs and RBIs. Jarvis started behind the plate for Bradley for four seasons. As a junior, he was named to the Johnny Bench watch list for the best catchers in NCAA Division I.

• Erica Maisto: Recently named the Rockets’ varsity softball coach, the 2008 graduate holds the school’s career record for pitching wins (76) and tied the record for wins in a season with 27. She had 547 career strikeouts and only 46 walks and threw 50 career shutouts. Maisto also golfed for Central and had a collegiate softball career at Upper Iowa University.

• Cameron Ostrowski: A 2010 graduate, Ostrowski competed in boys track and field and soccer. He finished second at the Class 2A state track finals in the high jump in 2010 before going on to Iowa State, where he shined as a three-time all-American and was the 2012 Big 12 Conference champion in the high jump.

• Kayla Oranger: One of the key cogs of the Rockets’ third-place state softball team in 2009, Oranger was a three-time all-state shortstop. She holds the school record for career hits (212), runs scored (177) and stolen bases (159), all which rank in the top 15 in IHSA history. Oranger went on to a four-year career at Texas-El Paso.

• Molly Turk: Helped the Rockets girls volleyball team to a second-place finish in the 2008 Class 3A state finals when she had over 700 assists for the season. Earned all-state honors as a senior, and also was named honorable mention All-America. Also competed in basketball at Central before going on to a volleyball career at Northern Iowa.

•1952-53 football teams: Both squads went undefeated and won Rainbow Conference championships back when high school football was played as a six-man sport.
