CRYSTAL LAKE – A 24-hour gym will be opening its first McHenry County location in Crystal Lake early next year.
Set to open in the spring, Planet Fitness will occupy 20,000 square feet in the Bohl Farm Marketplace, next to the recently opened Fresh Thyme Farmers Market.
The gym will employ about 15 people.
The health club would join more than 40 Planet Fitness locations in Illinois and more than 1,000 nationwide. The closest gyms currently are located in Elgin, Bloomingdale, Des Plaines and Addison.
Chris Rondeau, chief executive officer of Planet Fitness, said in a statement the health club is “innovative” and provides “a judgment free, high-quality fitness experience that is accessible and affordable to everyone.”
Planet Fitness offers two types of memberships, including one at $10 a month for access to a set home club and unlimited personal training.
Another membership starts at $19.99 and includes access to any location, guest privileges, use of tanning beds and massage chairs, and other perks, according to its website.
Route 14 – where Planet Fitness will be opening – has been the site of several new businesses this year.
Fresh Thyme opened earlier this fall at the former Dominick’s building.
Burlington opened at the former Marshall’s and Toys R Us, and the Aldi’s grocery store recently relocated to Route 14.
“Businesses and investors are continuing to see the growth potential in Crystal Lake, and we are looking forward to Planet Fitness opening early next year,” Planning and Economic Development Manager James Richter said. “They are a great addition to the Route 14 corridor.”
