About: Downtown Glen Ellyn comes alive with thousands of villagers awaiting the arrival of Santa and the lighting of the Christmas Tree. Join Santa at 6 p.m. at Main Street and Crescent Boulevard to watch him light the tree. Santa will then head to the fire station at Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue to greet the children until 8:30 p.m. Shops and restaurants throughout downtown Glen Ellyn will be open late and will be offering treats for holiday shoppers.

Lighted Holiday Parade

Where: Wheaton Avenue and Front Street, Wheaton

About: After a tree-lighting ceremony, the holiday parade will start on Wheaton Avenue near City Hall before turning down Front Street and ending at Cross Street. This event kicks off the Downtown Wheaton Association's "Dickens of a Christmas Celebration," a series events that run through Dec. 19.

The Essential Christmas Carol

About: In this storytelling lecture, William Pack first relates the curious origins behind one of the most popular stories ever written, Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol." Then, using a script derived from Dickens' only existing abridged reading copy, Pack will perform a reading of "A Christmas Carol" enhanced with a modern recreation of a magic lantern slide show popular during Dickens' lifetime. Sponsored by the La Grange Park Friends of the Library.
