Area Roundup: Lockport swims to sectional win

LOCKPORT – Lockport won the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays Saturday to claim the title in the girls swimming sectional the Porters hosted.

Winners in each event, and anyone else bettering the predetermined qualifying time, advance to next weekend’s state meet at New Trier.

Lockport junior Brittney O’Neill, senior Kirsten Breitbarth, senior Sharlene Solis and junior Lauren Estes combined to swim a 1:50.6 in the medley relay. In the 200 free, the Porters’ quartet of O’Neill, junior Makayla Kraus, freshman Emily Johnson and Estes swam a 1:37.95.

Lockport ended with 262 points to 253 for second-place Sandburg. Lincoln-Way Central was third at 179, Lincoln-Way West fifth at 148, Morris eighth at 50, Providence 10th at 38, Joliet West 11th at 22 and Joliet Catholic 12th at 15.

Lincoln-Way Central senior Kim Bernhard won the 200 free in 1:55.93 to advance to state. Knights freshman Constance Senese was a double winner, taking the 200 IM in 2:09.17 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.70.

Providence senior Maria Papes won the 100 butterfly in 59.16 seconds and moved on to state with her second-place 2:09.63 in the 200 IM.

Lincoln-Way West had a sectional champion in junior Caitlyn Schreiber, who finished the 50 free in 24.15.

In diving, the sectional champions statewide advance along with the top 32 scores of nonsectional winners. Lockport had the second- and third-place finishers in senior Carolyn Dietz, who totaled 517.15 points; and junior Jessica Wirtz, who totaled 462.35.

Neuqua Valley Sectional: The Plainfield Central co-op swimmers finished seventh in the loaded sectional with 114 points and had numerous state qualifiers. Lemont was 12th with nine points.

For Plainfield Central, senior Carly Kramer, a Plainfield North student who will continue her career at Arizona State, won the 100 fly in 56.05.

Junior Shaw Barney, sophomore Kate Meunier, Kramer and freshman Veronica Banas combined to finish third in the 200 medley relay in 1:46.34. The Wildcats’ Kramer, Banas, Barney and Meunier were sixth in the 400 free relay in 3:33.5, while Banas, sophomore Grace Walter, senior Rachel Walter and Kramer were eighth in the 200 free relay in 1:38:11.

Barney finished fourth in 2:09, and Meunier was fifth in 2:09.06 in the 200 IM. Meunier also advanced after finishing sixth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.25.

Lincoln-Way East Sectional: Lincoln-Way East claimed the championship in its swimming sectional with 305 points. Lincoln-Way North was second at 246 and Homewood-Flossmoor third with 211.

East won all three relays and received first places from senior Fiona McDermott in the 200 IM (2:07.74) and 500 free (5:09.63). Sophomore Makayla Varga won the 50 free in 24.67 and the 100 fly in 56.42. Junior Cailin Merck took the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.75. Junior Michaela Mitchell was second in the 100 back in 58.13 and advanced.

The Griffins’ 200 medley unit of Mitchell, Merck, Varga and senior Susan Stelmar won in 1:48.48. Stelmar, sophomore Julia Signorelli, Merck and McDermott combined for a 1:39.53 winning time in the 200 free. Stelmar, Varga, Mitchell and McDermott swam a 3:37.1 in claiming the 400 free relay.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

No. 12 JJC 77, Lake Michigan 69: JJC (5-0) overcame 20 turnovers as Darius Wells scored 16 points, plus Matt Hund (Plainfield Central) and Pat Kenny 14 and Daymeann Stewart 11. The Wolves had a 45-30 rebounding edge as Kenny and Hund combined for 15 boards.

Lewis 89, Davis & Elkins 86: Lewis (2-0) won its second straight in the Don Callan Classic at Cedarville, Ohio. Max Strus scored 19 points to go with seven rebounds and seven assists. Frank Vukaj had 16 points and Capel Henshaw 14 after hitting four 3-pointers for the second straight day. Brad Forster (Lincoln-Way Central) and Delaney Blaylock added 10. Foster hit 5 of 6 shots. In Friday’s 88-71 win over Cedarville, Kyle Nelson scored 25 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Strus had 21 points and 11 rebounds, and Henshaw scored 16.
