Dark art exhibit to open at Kosart Gallery in Westmont

WESTMONT – An artists reception from 3 to 10 p.m. Nov. 14 opens the fifth annual Maleficium dark art exhibition in Westmont, curated by Lisle native J. Anthony Kosar, the special effects artist who is a past champion of the Syfy network’s “Face Off.”

Maleficium is a Latin term meaning mischief and is used to describe black magic and the dark arts, Kosar said in a news release. He noted the name was selected to represent the exhibit as a metaphor for the Halloween-inspired artwork. The show will feature works by 60 award-winning artists of all media. After the free reception, the show is open only by appointment until Dec. 18 at Kosart Studios & Gallery, 760 Burr Oak Drive.

All ages are welcome, but because of the dark theme and content of the show, attendee discretion is advised, Kosar said in the release.

At the reception, a raffle will benefit Little Friends Inc., and will offer prizes such as signed prints, books, comics, masks and figurines donated by the artists. The drawing will take place at 10 p.m. Nov. 14, and the winner need not be present. All proceeds go to Little Friends, which serves children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities.

Costumes and creative attire are optional at the reception. Wine and cheese will be served.

Artists in the show range from Clive Barker to Jordu Schell. Among the talents is Jamie Koala, an artist and fashion designer in Carol Stream.
