Dr. Timothy Kisla is a board certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist specializing in treatment of corneal diseases. A regional leader in cataract surgery and advanced lens and laser-assisted surgical options, Kisla sees patients in his office located in Pavilion B of Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox. Using the most up-to-date technology and surgical options available, Kisla performs more than 600 cataract surgeries a year.
While most people don’t recognize the eye as being an organ, it is, in fact, one of the most complex organs in the human body, with many layers and aspects, according to Kisla, a former certified public accountant who returned to school at age 30 to study medicine.
“I went into medicine with the goal of helping people, and the field of ophthalmology offers me the ability to provide patients with a medical or surgical solution to their problems and help them return to a normal functioning life,” Kisla said.
“To most people vision is the most precious of the five senses,” Kisla said. “We use our eyes constantly – to work, play, relax. Many other health conditions first start with manifestations of the disease in the eye. A regular eye exam can detect early onset of diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.”
Routine eye care can also detect slowly progressing eye diseases such as glaucoma, the second leading cause of blindness, or macular degeneration, Kisla explained.
“Early detection and treatment of these diseases can make a difference in preserving your eyesight,” said Kisla.
Kisla also treats corneal infections, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, dry eye syndrome and macular degeneration.
“As a physician, it is a distinct honor and no light responsibility to assist patients to protect, preserve, maintain or restore their vision,” Kisla said.
