Man seriously injured at Sycamore Steam Show and Threshing Bee

SYCAMORE – A man in his 30s was airlifted to OSF St. Anthony's Hospital in Rockford on Friday after he got an arm stuck in an antique gasoline-powered engine at the Sycamore Steam Show and Threshing Bee, fire officials said.

A helicopted landed in the event parking lot at the Taylor Marshall Farm at 27707 Lukens Road in Sycamore, and took off with the man inside around 10:40 a.m. Vehicles were not permitted to enter or exit the event during the emergency response.

The man's arm was critically injured, but his life is not in jeopardy, Sycamore Assistant Fire Chief Marc Doty said at the scene.

Dan Kocher, the steam show event director, said it was the worst injury they'd seen in the 59-year history of the event. There were ATEC ambulances on the scene in case of emergency, and so paramedics were able to help the injured man before Sycamore fire officials arrived.

Steam Show events will continue as planned today, Kocher said.
