Morris 8U Tomahawks cap strong season

The Morris 8U Tomahawks baseball team ended its season on a high note, winning the Naperville Firecracker Game Day Tournament.

In pool play, the Tomahawks defeated Fox Valley, 25-0, Hamlin Park, 18-2 and Lombard, 39-0. They then upended Hamlin Park, 10-0, in the tournament semifinals before claiming a 15-0 win over Rhino East in the title game.

For the tournament, Morris won five games by a combined score of 107-2.

All 10 players on the roster pitched, combining to strike out 64 percent of the batters they faced. Offensively, the Tomahawks amassed 112 hits for the tournament while striking out only nine times in five games. They did not strike out once in the championship game.

The team – comprised of Payton Sterritt, Luc Rink, Jack Wheeler, Brett Bounds, Griffin Zweeres, Merek Klicker, Finn Hackett, Stevie Wagner, Cody Del Favero and Colin Pfeifer – finished the summer with a 44-5 record, including six championships.

They won the Illinois Travel Baseball League Gold West Division title, along with crowns at Spring Fling in Bourbonnais, New Lenox Memorial Day Classic, Yorkville Reds Rumble, Mokena Father’s Day Classic and Game Day Naperville Firecracker.

They also finished as the runner-up at the Lockport Lockdown.

For the season, the Tomahawks pitchers struck out 62 percent of the batters they faced and the team finished with a .546 batting average. An average of .700 led the team, with .377 being the lowest. The Tomahawks also finished with 104 stolen bases.

TRYOUTS: For those interested in playing for next year's 9U Tomahawks, tryouts are from 6 to 8 p.m. July 26 and 27 at McKinley Park. Please attend both days.

Players who are going to be nine years old or younger by April 30, 2016, are eligible to try out.

SOFTBALL

2015 Lady Irish All-Star Summer Softball Camp: The camp will take place from 10 a.m. to noon from July 27 through 29 at the Seneca High School softball complex and gymnasiums.

Four Seneca High School All-State and current collegiate players can come together to participate in a three-day summer softball camp while also being instructed by Dan Stecken, the head softball coach at Seneca High School.

The camp will be a total skills camp open to first- through eighth-graders.

This camp is set at a time that will allow girls to prepare for travel team tryouts – usually at the end of July or early August, tryouts for junior high softball, or to get better at softball. For $45, each camper will receive a T-shirt and other Seneca softball prizes.

PARENT MEETING

Coal City Middle School: A parent meeting for anyone who has a student that plans on playing softball, baseball or girls basketball in the fall at Coal City Middle School will be at the middle school at 6 p.m. July 22. Enter the building through the gym entrance.

TRYOUTS

Coal City Middle School: Softball tryouts will take place at the Coal City Middle School softball field from 10 a.m until noon July 27 and 28.

For baseball tryouts, all grades will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 3; eighth grade from 8 to 10 a.m. Aug. 4; seventh grade from 9 to 11 a.m.; and sixth grade from 10 a.m. to noon at the Coal City Middle School baseball field. All athletes must have a valid physical to participate in tryouts.
