WOODRIDGE – A Northlake man was sentenced June 23 to 47 years in prison for the December 2012 murder and sexual assault of his former girlfriend in Woodridge, according to a DuPage County State's Attorney's Office news release.
In May, Adam Belmont, 26, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and aggravated criminal sexual assault in the stabbing death of Alyssa Van Meter of Woodridge, the release stated.
At about 11:30 p.m. Dec. 15, 2012, Woodridge police officers responded to a burglary/death investigation call and found a deceased Van Meter on the bedroom floor of her apartment with a stab wound in her chest, according to the release.
The police investigation revealed that at about 9 p.m., Belmont gained access into Van Meter's apartment by climbing up the outside balcony and through a window. Once he was inside the apartment, a physical altercation ensued between the two in which Belmont choked Van Meter until she was unconscious, the release stated.
Belmont then stabbed her one time in the chest, piercing her heart, and sexually assaulted her, according to the release.
Following the murder, Belmont fled the scene. He was arrested later that evening without incident, the release stated.
“For the brutal murder and sexual assault of Alyssa Van Meter, Adam Belmont will spend the next 47 years of his life away from society where he will be unable to harm anyone,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in the release. “This was a horrific crime that will continue to weigh heavily on the shoulders of Alyssa’s family and friends for years to come."
Belmont was sentenced to 35 years in prison to be served at 100 percent for the murder and 12 years served at 85 percent for the aggravated criminal sexual assault, according to the release. The sentences will be served consecutively, resulting in the 47-year sentence.
