MOKENA – Second grade classes at Arbury Hills School experienced a day of school in a one-room schoolhouse when they took a field trip to Schmuhl School in New Lenox.
Students were placed in groups to simulate how a teacher in the 1930s might have worked with students of various grades all in one classroom.
Students completed reading lessons, arithmetic, penmanship, and science. They played Jacob's Ladder, jacks, jump rope, and marbles. They packed their lunches in metal cans. The girls wore dresses and put their hair in braids or ponytails. The one room schoolhouse teachers are all volunteers from the New Lenox Area Historical Society.
