Divine Infant Jesus School wins $5,000 in ComEd Earth Month Challenge

WESTCHESTER – Students of Divine Infant Jesus School, 1640 Newcastle Ave., were recently well rewarded for their efforts in energy conservation.

The school was named the grand prize winner of ComEd's Earth Month Challenge June 1 and received a check for $5,000 and an end of year ice cream social.

The Earth Month Challenge was started to increase awareness about the need for energy conservation. Almost 6,000 students from 17 participating elementary schools worked with their teachers and parents on how to save energy at school and at home. According to ComEd, students were able to save more than 19,900 watt-hours of electricity, which is enough to power two homes for a whole year.

"I was very impressed with the presentation at our opening assembly for the Earth Month Challenge," said Leonard Gramarossa, principal of Divine Infant Jesus School. "The students, faculty and parents in attendance were motivated and showed a great deal of enthusiasm for the project, as well as for the values of conserving our energy sources. Each week the excitement increased as our project leader and teachers kept on motivating our students to do their best to encourage their parents to be energy smart. All in all, a very worthwhile learning experience and we are very fortunate to be the top school this year."
