CRYSTAL LAKE – Kimberley Shipbaugh didn't mean to startle a stranger when she yelled "good morning" to him from the roof of the Crystal Lake Dunkin' Donuts.
Shipbaugh, a community relations officer with the Crystal Lake Police Department, was one of two officers perched on the roof of the doughnut chain overlooking Route 14. The officers climbed to the roof at 5 a.m. to start their fundraising campaign for the Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics Illinois.
“Once they recognize it's us on the roof, they wave back," Shipbaugh said. "I yelled 'good morning' and he stood and looked around before he looked up."
More than 170 officers across the state took part in the Cop on a Rooftop fundraiser Friday. Dunkin' Donuts in Carpentersville, Cary, Fox Lake, Fox River Grove, Lake in the Hills , McHenry, Huntley and Woodstock participated in the 13th annual event.
The goal is to raise money that will benefit the 22,000 Special Olympics athletes statewide. Last year's event raised $430,000. This year, Dunkin' Donuts donated $15,000 to the Touch Run fund.
At the Crystal Lake location alone, customers donated more than $500 by 7 a.m., Shipbaugh said. Cars packed into the drive-thru, sometimes backing onto Route 14.
While Shipbaugh and officer Ken Ellinger waved at the passing cars, police department records supervisor Deb Palmsiano and Special Olympics athlete Brent Kampert, 29, of Crystal Lake, took donations at the drive-thru.
Kampert – a Special Olympics athlete for 17 years – beamed at people's generosity Friday morning. Some people pulled $10 bills from their wallets, while others scraped the change from the center console.
“Whether you have disability or not, it's important to know that you have so many friends and family supporting you, as you're supporting them,” Kampert said. “And just to know that you can achieve so much more whether you have a disability or not.”
