DEER GROVE – There’s one “Jackass” star who really wants to make you laugh this weekend. Why?
Well, he’s “too scared to steal and too lazy to work.”
Preston Lacy, a writer and performer in the “Jackass” reality TV show and movies, will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at Arnie’s Happy Spot, 1667 Hoover Road. His friend and fellow comedian, Tom Garland, also will perform.
Lacy, an admittedly large man, is best known for his “Jackass” skits that involved his chasing Jason “Wee-Man” Acuña down public streets in nothing more than their underwear and white T-shirts.
The Deer Grove stop is part of a string of stand-up comedy shows Lacy is performing in the Midwest.
Garland saw Lacy doing shtick with Tim Matheson on the Tom Green Show and called him to ask him to do some gigs, Lacy said in an email.
Lacy suggested doing a run in the Midwest so they wouldn’t have to fly, and within 24 hours they have 11 shows lined up.
Stand-up comedy is something Lacy has done even before his time with “Jackass,” but he admits “it’s way more fun when people know who the heck you are.”
Lacy seems to be thankful for the opportunities the franchise has allowed him.
“It doesn’t bother me a bit,” Lacy said of how he caught his break. “In fact, four of my [“Jackass”] castmates are going to get together and do some comedy shows in May and June.
“We asked Johnny Knoxville [co-creator and star of “Jackass”] when we could retire, and he said, ‘The Three Stooges were well into their 60s when they retired.’”
So, what can audience members expect from the show?
“A mix of a stand-up comedy, improv, and audience participation, with some goofy non-dangerous stunts at the end,” Lacy said.
After the Midwest tour, Lacy will head to California to film a pilot for Comedy Central and perform with his “Jackass” castmates.
Making people laugh is something Lacy knew he had a gift for since elementary school in Jasper County, Missouri. In fact, his background is similar to many of those in the Sauk Valley.
He didn’t balk when he found out that Deer Grove’s population resides somewhere around 50 people.
“That’s 47 more people than the town I’m from. I grew up in the rural Missouri Ozarks,” Lacy said.
Now, the comedian splits his time between Los Angeles and Austin, Texas.
Tickets cost $5 for the show only, or $11 with a chicken dinner included.
Tickets are available in advance, and at the door, which will open at 6:30 p.m. The food special runs from 6:30 to 7:30.
An autograph and picture session with fans will follow the show.
And, the restaurant can be sure this performer will enjoy his dinner, too.
“I can’t wait to do a show there,” he said, “and get my fat hands on some of that regionally famous fried chicken.”
