Tim Affield, then 20, was eating at McDonald's on Route 14 in Crystal Lake when the Palm Sunday tornado struck Crystal Lake on April 11, 1965. He didn't see the tornado but ventured into the damaged Colby subdivision where he went through the devastation. He also worked at Northwood mink ranch in the rural Cary at the time and ended up helping round up mink in the days after the storm.

“There were rows and rows of cages and it, you know, it just tore up all the cages and rows.”
