Movies 10 closing, Dick's Sports, DSW coming to Joliet

JOLIET – The Cinemark Movies 10 discount theater in Joliet is closing and will be replaced by a sporting goods store and shoe shop, Mayor Tom Giarrante said Friday.

Dick’s Sporting Goods and DSW will replace the theater, located at 2601 Plainfield Road in the Louis Joliet Pointe shopping center.

The date of the Movies 10 closing was not available Friday.

Giarrante said construction work will start in the spring.

“They’re going to tear the building down and build a new one,” Giarrante said.

Movies 10 offers mostly second-run movies at discount prices. Movies are priced as low as $1. The theater was turned into a discount operation in 2009 when Cinemark opened a new theater in the Louis Joliet Mall.

Cinemark representatives were not immediately available for comment Friday.

But the theater may have suffered from competition from alternative movie sources, said Jim Haller, the city’s director of community and economic development.

Haller said city officials have talked with the developer working on the project.

“They did tell us that Movies 10 fell prey to the Netflix and Redboxes of the world,” Haller said. “They said there’s not a lot of money [in discount theaters], and there’s a lot of competition in the marketplace.”

Haller said the new stores may open late this year.
