Tammy Clausen leaves Berwyn library to head west

BERWYN – Berwyn Public Library Director Tammy Clausen has left the building.

The longtime executive director left her position at the Berwyn library to accept a new position in Colorado.

Clausen left her position as library director effective Oct. 20, just short of 15 years from when she first came to Berwyn as a librarian. She was named director of the library in 2009.

A native of Colorado, Clausen and her family will be moving to Douglas County, where she will take charge of a the county’s district library.

“It has a wonderful reputation and I’m looking forward to it,” she said.” I have family there, so I’m kind of returning home.”

Clausen grew up in Cortez, Colo., near Mesa Verde National Park and came to Berwyn via Albuquerque, N.M., she said.

Clausen’s husband, John, who works for Trader Joe’s, has been transferred as well, making the transition a lot easier.

“There’s been a lot of planning and coordinating,” Clausen said.

She has seen a lot in her years as a librarian but said during her time in Berwyn, the biggest change in library science has been the role technology now plays.

“It’s added so many layers to library service,” she said. “Libraries can pretty much [run] 24 hours. They are broader, [and more] community-based, so space isn’t just for books.”

As a director, she was inspired by the change and pushed the Berwyn library to expand its services to include more classes for kids and adults and provide more programming such as GED services and job searches.

“Libraries are the one place where the whole community can get help,” she said. “I see this growing.”

Clausen added she will truly miss Berwyn.

“I love the progressive and talented residents,” she said. “I think they are incredibly giving. We’ve made so many friends here.”
