WHEATON – One of downtown Wheaton's mainstay restaurants has closed, but another appears to be hot on its heels.
Genghis Grill, a national chain with a Wheaton location at 106 N. Hale St., was owned by residents Derek and Victoria Bromstead, but is now closed, according to a post on the restaurant's Facebook page dated Sept. 29.
The two will be moving to California due to family issues.
"We want to thank all our [sic] FANS for the [seven] great years of support that you have given us," the post stated. "We have been blessed to meet many, many wonderful people, and we have had terrific staff members too. We will always be grateful for the time that we had in Wheaton. Thank you all for helping in our success."
Downtown Wheaton Association Executive Director Paula Barrington said the downtown community was sad to hear of the closure. The pair had been active in the association for years, she said, but she respected their decision and wished them the best.
"Family takes priority ... but at the same time, we're going to miss Genghis Grill," Barrington said. "It was a great stir fry venue as one of our restaurant options in the downtown area."
Barrington said the Bromsteads, who plan to retain ownership of the building, are in talks with a new restaurant to move into the space.
"I'm confident that it will be a restaurant that will complement what we have downtown and expand our restaurant options," she said.
