WHEATON – Fran Levant's passion for hair began in the eighth grade.

"Hair was what I wanted to do and I never wavered," she said. "Honestly, it's embarrassing, I thought I could save my relatives from baldness. But it's a rewarding business."

She took that childhood dream and turned it into a career spanning several decades, opening the salon that shares her name – Levant Salon and Day Spa – 40 years ago Sept. 25.

Levant said she began her business in her home, styling neighbors, friends and family.

Throughout the years, her dedication didn't fade, as she expanded her services to include a full spa with massage tables.

"People are so grateful for what you do," she said. "There's no place other than a doctor's office that women can come and talk freely and regularly."

That chatter has been a career highlight, she said, adding "nothing surprises me anymore."

All kinds of people have walked through her doors, sometimes over the span of decades. Trying to keep up with their changing styles has been a challenge and a thrill, she said.

Levant recently got a purple highlight as part of a dare from a customer.

"I'm in a business with a lot of younger employees, so I'm in a much younger mindset," she said. "It helps you feel younger."

Levant's daughter, Terri Costello, has worked for her mother for years. She said Levant is a model boss, creating a safe and honest space where stylists and masseuses can feel comfortable.

That makes Levant a welcome place for patrons as well, Costello said.

"I think they like the feeling when they come in here," she said. "They feel like part of the family. I think we're all family."
