DeKALB – A traffic stop by a Northern Illinois University police officer led to the seizure of several pounds of marijuana Monday, court records show.
After the officer stopped Alec Hafeman for driving 48 mph in a 30 mph zone around 10:20 a.m. Monday in the 600 block of Annie Glidden Road, the officer smelled marijuana in the car, court records show.
Hafeman, 21, of the 800 block of Ridge Drive in DeKalb, allowed the officer to search his 2001 Ford, and the officer discovered about five pounds of marijuana, court records show.
The amount of marijuana seized has an estimated street value of $45,000, DeKalb County Assistant State’s Attorney Jessica Finley said.
The officer also found drug paraphernalia, multiple plastic baggies, scales, bags coated with wax, a silicon concentrate jar filled with wax, and several knives within the driver’s reach, court records show. Hafeman said he had the knives for protection, authorities said.
He was charged with unlawful manufacture or delivery of marijuana, unlawful possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. If convicted of unlawful manufacture or delivery of marijuana, he could face probation or up to 15 years in prison.
Hafeman is expected to ask a judge to reduce his $30,000 bond Thursday.
