Fundraiser to support recent Addison Trail grad with leukemia

ADDISON – A fundraiser will take place next week to support a recent Addison Trail High School graduate who was diagnosed with leukemia a few months ago.

In April, Xena Nelms started to feel increasing fatigue. She was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia May 1. Nelms recently underwent her first round of chemotherapy but was able to return to school and visit her classmates June 3 and walk across the stage during graduation June 8, according to a District 88 newsletter.

Nelms said in the newsletter she was thrilled to be able to finish her senior year with her friends by attending graduation and prom.

Nelms’ mom, Carrie, said she’s overwhelmed by the support from Addison Trail and the community. Addison Trail Principal Adam Cibulka and Athletic Director Matt Thompson visited Nelms at Loyola University Medical Center, where she’s receiving treatment, according to the newsletter.

Cibulka said Nelms made a huge impact on Addison Trail during her years at the school. She was involved with an event to help incoming freshmen transition to high school called Pay It Forward, as well as yearbook, Student Council, National Honor Society and the Addison Trail-Willowbrook Girls Swim Team, the newsletter stated.

A fundraiser for the Nelms family will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday at American Tap Pub & Eatery, 701 W. Lake St.

A $10 minimum donation includes a buffet and a chance to win door prizes. Kids under 12 are free, and all donations will go directly to the Nelms family.

The evening will also include split the pot, raffles and a silent auction.
