ELMHURST – For math students and teachers alike, March 14, or Pi Day, is a pretty big deal; but Elmhurst seventh-grader Donovan Deany took this year's celebrations to a record-breaking level.
Bryan Middle School students competed for the seventh year in a row to see who could name the most digits of Pi, which never ends and never repeats. Beginning 3.14, Pi is used in formulas to find the area and circumference of circles.
Donovan correctly recited 412 digits, breaking the school's record set in 2010. His closest competitor was Ciara Mulcahy, also in seventh grade. She memorized 253 digits.
Students also competed in a poster contest to celebrate the international holiday.
