Rumors fly of Stanley Cup's appearance in Hinsdale

OAK BROOK – Fresh off the jubilation of a Chicago Blackhawks second Stanley Cup win in four years, rumor spread of Lord Stanley's arrival in Oak Brook with coach Joel Quenneville early Tuesday at York Tavern.

But to the dismay of several fans, the Stanley Cup did not make an appearance, and neither did Quenneville at the tavern, but he was in Hinsdale at Page's Restaurant, according to a restaurant manager, for breakfast prompting several residents to suspect he was carrying the cup around to some familiar places.

Owner Vito Moreci said York Tavern is a favorite of the Hinsdale resident and after his first Stanley Cup championship in 2010, Quenneville brought the Cup to the tavern following the parade in Chicago.

Moreci showed off the photos from that day proudly as they hung on the wall near the bar.

“The cup, they're going to bring in after the parade from Chicago,” Moreci said. “Nothing is scheduled yet though.”

Not long after word spread of the Stanley Cup's presence in town a line of cars filled York Road as people tried to get sight of the same trophy hoisted by players in Boston the night before.

The storm Tuesday didn't help the chaos though as power was out along York Road. In fact, as of 5 p.m. Tuesday power still hadn't returned to the tavern after going out the previous night. The bar had to rely on a generator to stay open.

Long lines of traffic, broken stop lights and pouring rain wasn't enough to keep fans away from believing the rumor, and one of the reasons is because of Quenneville's presence in town.

“Everybody likes him because he's such a nice person,” Moreci said.
