WESTMONT — The Westmont Village Board earlier this month approved updates to the Village Building Code and Fire Code regarding fire alarms and sprinkler systems.
The new ordinance requires all businesses to install and have operational fire detection and wireless alarm systems that connect business properties with the Westmont emergency dispatch centers in Downers Grove by June 30.
The new ordinance also outlines a 24-month extension for fire sprinkler systems in the downtown business district with a compliance date of May 30, 2015.
“This ordinance ensures that businesses will be making life safety improvements to their properties that will result in greater safety for the entire community,” said Westmont Fire Chief David Weiss. “These are important fire protection measures that are supported by fire departments across the country.”
Businesses found in violation of this ordinance may incur a fine of $750/day for each day in which the business is found in violation of the ordinance, officials said.
The village had originally passed an ordinance regarding businesses and fire protection improvements in 2009. The recent ordinance outlines an updated and specific timeline for these improvements to be completed and operational, and institutes specific penalties for noncompliance.
Businesses with questions regarding the Fire Sprinkler Ordinance and the timeline for compliance should contact the Westmont Fire Prevention Bureau at 630-981-6424.
