Ex-Cary man slain with bat

A former Cary man was beaten to death in his bed last week with a baseball bat, police in Phoenix said. They arrested a Chicago man – the ex-husband of the dead man’s girlfriend.

David Walker, 29, has been charged in the killing of Adam Moring, also 29.

Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos said Walker flew to Phoenix and arrived at his former wife’s home about 12:30 a.m. Thursday. Walker entered through the back door, got a baseball bat from the garage, and went into a bedroom where his ex-wife was sleeping with Moring, police said.

Walker allegedly repeatedly hit Moring in the head with the bat. Police said he also hit his ex-wife and forced her to drive with their two children to nearby Tempe. When Walker got out and ran away, the woman called police.

Martos said Walker was found in a hotel late Thursday and arrested on suspicion of murder and other charges.

Moring’s family in Illinois is distraught and in shock, said his aunt, Gail Frank of Cary. She said the family is working to bring Moring’s body back to Illinois and cover expenses related to the killing.

The victim’s uncle, Bob Moring, has set up “Adam’s Fund” for donations at Wells Fargo banks. The account number is 1229207962.

“It has been a very emotional time for our family and everyone that knew and loved Adam,” Bob Moring said in an email.

Frank said Adam Moring loved art and was very funny. She said he had worked at Walmart in Round Lake as the head of the produce department. Frank said Moring lived in Cary for eight or nine months, then lived briefly in Round Lake with his father, John Moring. In August, he went with his girlfriend to Arizona, hoping to get a job with the help of a relative, she said.

Frank said Moring had been in a fight with Walker in the past and got the best of Walker.

Moring had called his father to say that Walker might show up in Round Lake looking for him, family members said.

Adam Moring’s mother, Jo Hedges, said she will remember her son’s humor and how he was a good artist.

“He was funny. He had a very good heart. He loved children. He always was the little playful type,” Hedges said. “He was a great wonderful guy.”
