PEORIA — Goodwill of Central Illinois accepts electronics for free recycling.
Electronics can be dropped off at any of Goodwill’s nine stores or four donation centers. Beginning Jan. 1, in accordance with Illinois’ Electronic Products and Recycling Act, Illinois residents are prohibited from disposing of certain electronics in their garbage and ultimately in the landfill.
Electronics include, but is not limited to computers (desktop, laptop and tablet), all computer accessories (mice, cords and monitors), printers, scanners, fax machines, TVs, VCRs, DVD players, CD players and video game consoles.
"Recycling is a major part of Goodwill's culture," said Patty Fuchs, Goodwill's President and CEO.
"In 2011, we recycled 4.30 million pounds of goods, so this is a natural fit for us. It's great way to help the green effort and help the people of central Illinois at the same time."
Goodwill has been accepting computers and computer accessories for recycling since its partnership with Dell Computers began in 2010.
Through the Dell Reconnect Program, Goodwill accepts any brand of computer and computer accessories for recycling.
“The Dell Reconnect Program was a great start for us to begin electronics recycling,” said Scott Jenkins, Goodwill’s Director of Operations.
“Since then we have expanded to accept and recycle pretty much anything with an electrical cord. Our recycling is done responsibly, using only companies in the United States.”
Goodwill stores are located in Peoria, East Peoria, Washington, Canton, Kewanee, Galesburg, Pekin and Peru. Goodwill donation centers are located in Peoria, Chillicothe and Morton.
Goodwill of Central Illinois is a non-profit organization that provides job training, career and vocational services to veterans, individuals and families who are working to better their lives.
