Matt Oswalt, 17, of Dixon, is Newman Central Catholic High School’s November Student of the Month. He is the son of Tim and Mary Beth Oswalt, 45 and 46, of Dixon; his siblings are Mary Alice, 16; Max, 14; Lizzie, 12; Maggie, 10; Emma, 6; and Joe, 4, all of Dixon.

Favorite class: Calculus. It’s a privilege to be taught by the lovely Ann Propheter.

Top teacher: Ann Propheter. She knows what she’s talking about and she’s got a good sense of humor.

Extracurriculars: Football, swimming, scholastic bowl, baseball, National Honors Society and I’m a Kairos leader.

After graduation: I want to study education at North Central College in Naperville. I want to teach elementary school.

Paycheck: I detassel and I work maintenance at the Dixon baseball fields in the summer.

Best friend: Juan Gonzalez. We’ve known each other since seventh grade, and he’s the first male cheerleader at Newman.

Favorite musical group: Blink 182.

Favorite actor: Will Ferrell.

Favorite movie: “Field of Dreams.”

Favorite TV show: “South Park.”

Hobbies: Listening to music and lifting weights.

Favorite game or outdoor activity: Wiffle ball.

Favorite food: Steak, medium rare. It’s the best.

Favorite sports team: The Chicago White Sox.

Biggest fear: Sharks.

Least favorite class: Physics.

What makes your blood boil? Obnoxious Chicago Cubs fans.

What kind of music makes your skin crawl? Screaming music or techno.

Haunts: My friend’s house.

Survival guide: Do all of your homework and turn it all in.

Useless knowledge: Circle proofs.

In the dictionary next to: Friendly. I try to be nice to everybody.

Secret twin: When I have my goggles on, a lot of people tell me I look like Michael Phelps.

Personal trivia: I like to sing, but I’m terrible at it.

Dream job: Flying planes. It would be interesting to see if I could do it.

Trading places: The president of the U.S., because it would be interesting to see what kind of pressure he faces on a day-to-day basis.

Trading spaces: Poland, because that’s where part of my family is from.

Read this: “Brave New World,” by Aldous Huxley. It was kind of cool how relevant the issues in that book are today and how long ago it was written.
