Man arrested after standoff with police

FRANKLIN GROVE – What started as a call for a possible sexual assault led Lee County Sheriff’s deputies to arrest a Franklin Grove man who was suspected of having a gun and holing himself in a building for 3 hours early Saturday.

Shaun T. Jurgens, 32, was in the Lee County Jail on Saturday on a $50,000 bond and charged with resisting/obstructing a peace officer and two counts of delivery of alcohol to a minor.

Deputies were called about 3:25 a.m. to a building at 124 Lincoln Highway (state Route 38). Lee County Sheriff John Varga said the report was that a young girl, screaming that she had been raped during a house party, was being forced into the house by Jurgens.

Varga said Jurgens apparently had done work at the property for the owner, who lives outside of town.

When deputies arrived, multiple people, including Jurgens, were standing outside.

Jurgens then ran inside, locked the doors and shut off the lights, Varga said.

A bystander told deputies Jurgens had displayed a gun earlier.

After several unsuccessful attempts to reach Jurgens, tactical response teams from Lee County and Dixon forced their way into the house. They found Jurgens and a 17-year-old girl hiding under insulation in the attic.

Officers, believing Jurgens had a gun, ordered Jurgens to come out and put his hands up. When he refused, officers shot him with a Taser and took him into custody.

Deputies found shell casings on Jurgens, but no gun was found in the house, Varga said.

The girl denied to deputies that she had been assaulted, Varga said.

She, along with a 16-year-old boy, were charged with consumption of alcohol as a minor. Both were released to their parents.

Varga said deputies still are talking with witnesses to determine if more charges will be filed.

Varga said there was a “good quantity of alcohol” in the house, and that there were a lot of young people present.

The Franklin Grove Police and Fire departments assisted at the scene.
