CLINTON, Iowa – A Savanna man has been sentenced to up to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty in connection with trying to steal money from two pizza restaurant employees in May.

Marquez A. Martinez, 22, was sentenced late last week on one count each of conspiracy to commit a forcible felony, willful injury causing bodily injury and assault while participating in a felony. He was sentenced to up to 10 years in prison on the first charge and up to five years on each of the other two counts. The sentences will be served consecutively.

He is the first of three men to be sentenced in the case that accused them of the May 16 assault on two Domino’s Pizza workers who had driven across the street from their workplace to make a deposit at Citizens First Bank in the 1300 block of North Second Street around 12:30 a.m. that day.

According to court records, Martinez and the two other men, Justin Longmire, 20, and Robert Crampton, 22 – both of whom have pleaded guilty in recent weeks – tried to take the money bag from one of the two workers and that worker was hit in the head with a brick and started bleeding. The other employee called 911 and watched as the three fled the scene.

The three fled a Clinton officer and were apprehended a short time after being stopped by two Fulton police vehicles.

The three were arrested and charged with first-degree robbery.
