Area Roundup: Coal City soccer third at Streator

This past weekend, the Coal City soccer team finished in third place at the Streator Tournament, losing to Danville 2-1 and Streator 3-0 but defeating Paw Paw 2-1.

In the game against Danville, the Coalers started slow, eventually trailing 1-0 at halftime.

"We came out flat and found ourselves down at half," Coal City coach Branden Petersen said.

In the second half, Danville scored again on a penalty kick before Zack Pierard delivered on a cross from Ryan Petty and Jake Borgra scored.

Jake Sirovy had 8 saves in goal for the Coalers.

In the game against Paw Paw, Pierard scored to give the locals a 1-0 lead in the first half. He was assisted by Andrew Van Cura.

After Paw Paw tied it, Coal City took the lead back when Petty found Clay Kauzlaric on a direct kick for the goal.

In the third game, Petersen said his team looked tired.

"The first half, we had a tired looking team who had no break between games," he said. "With 10 minutes left in the first half, we needed subs and Streator capitalized with two goals. We played well and look forward to our rematch with them later in the year."

Sirovy had 13 saves and "Tommy Fatigante was an anchor on 'd'" according to Petersen.

Pierara and Kauzlaric were named to the All-Tournament team.
