FOX LAKE – Sweet treats are now more readily available in Fox Lake.
The Village Bakery, 27 E. Grand Ave., opened its doors March 25, owner Peter Duda said.
The bakery is located at a spot on Grand Avenue that is no stranger to baked goods. Prior to being purchased by Duda and his wife, Felicja, two years ago, the property had been home to a different bakery for decades.
After extensive renovations, the building is once again cooking up sweets and delicacies, Duda said.
"It's practically a brand-new building on the inside," he said.
Duda has been in the baking business for more than 20 years. His training is in a German and Austrian style of baking.
The European style the bakery utilizes requires less sugar than customers may be used to, Duda said, and leads to lighter creams in pastries.
Cookies, coffee cakes, donuts, muffins and more are available at the bakery. A dozen different varieties of bread, including rye, mulit-grain and wheat, also are featured, Duda said.
Customers should not feel limited by what they see on the menu at the Village Bakery. Special orders and requests can be accommodated, Duda said.
Pictures and artwork even can be iced onto a cake, he said.
"Whatever the customer requires, we'll put on a cake," he said.
Prices at the Village Bakery range from $5.95 for a coffee cake, $6.95 for a dozen donuts and $10.50 for a pound of butter cookies. Cakes start at $16.50, Duda said.
