General Sports Roundup : Minooka girls basketball sets school record with 20th win

In a pair of recent girls basketball games, the Morris Lady Redskins lost 31-30 to Yorkville in a non-conference contest and lost 47-38 on Monday against Streator in an NCIC game. Minooka set a school record for wins in a single season after beating Oswego East.


Streator 47,

Morris 38


Leslie Claire led the Redskins with 11 points while Kate Mallory added 6 points, 6 steals and 3 assists. Morris committed 31 turnover.

Streator trailed 9-6 at the end of the first quarter and 18-17 at halftime but then pulled ahead to lead 31-26 at the end of the third quarter.

Morris is now 15-11 on the season and 7-4 in league play.


Minooka 59,

Oswego East 53



OSWEGO — Making 19-of-26 attempts from the charity stripe, the Lady Indians improved to 20-5 on the season and 9-4 in the Southwest Prairie Conference.

"With tonight's outcome, we set a Minooka High School girls basketball school record with our 20th win," said Lady Indians coach Ray Liberatore. "What made the night even more special was that we played very well against a strong Oswego East team that had fiven us our last loss. Unlike the first time we played them, we shot the ball very well from the free throw line."

Minooka outscored the home team 22-6 in the fourth quarter to pull out the victory. Stephanie Furr, Morgan Novak and Lyndsay Doyle all wound up in double figures for the Lady Indians. Furr had 18 points, Novak 16 and Doyle 10. Ashley Clemmons ended with 7 markers.

Oswego East took the sophomore contest 34-27, dropping the Minooka underclassmen to 6-7 in the SPC and 8-17 on the year.

Streator 31


The younger Redskins won to improve to 14-9 overall and 6-5 in league play.

Morgan Feeney had 8 points and 5 rebounds for Morris while Taylor Johnson added 8 points. Additionally, Dani Cummings had 8 points and 7 assists, Kailey Brandt 7 points, Jessica Wills 6 points, Morgan Akre 4 points and 5 rebounds and Mariah Stinnette added a free throw.


BOYS BASKETBALL

Oswego 71,

Minooka 56



MINOOKA — The Indians fell to 1-9 in the Southwest Prairie Conference and 6-15 overall after being outscored by the Panthers 20-8 in the third quarter. Senior forward Cody Carter tossed in 23 points and grabbed 6 rebounds for Minooka. Jake Butler also got in double figures with 10 markers while Zach Colvin ended with 8.

IMSA 49



The Norsemen improved to 20-2 on the season with the 40-point non-conference victory against the Illinois Math and Science Academy.

Newark came out with the offense in full throttle and pushed ahead to a 23-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and posted a 55-25 lead at halftime against Titans.

Kyle Anderson had 31 points for Newark while Brett Anderson had 15 points and Paul Hines added 11.

Newark pulled in 43 rebounds in the contest and Derek Avery led the team with 11. Jeremy Anderson had 6 assists and 2 steals and both Kyle Anderson and Cameron Berg had 2 steals apiece.

Newark led 11-7 after the first quarter before the Norse exploded for 26 points in the second quarter to pull ahead 37-17 at halftime.

Brett Anderson led the Norsemen with 18 points while John Avery had 16 points and Kyle Anderson added 12

Cameron Berg made a pair of 3-point field goals to go with 2 free throws to end with 8 points and Jeremy Anderson had 7 points.

Brett Anderson had 9 rebounds to lead Newark. Kurt Anderson and Avery had 3 steals each.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Coal City 48,

Minooka 31


The Warriors avenged an earlier-season loss to the Indians by knocking them off for the championship of the Channahon Regional.

Dustin Krob had 23 points for Coal City while Lane Cowherd added 12 points.



GIRLS BASKETBALL

Rutland 40,

Nettle Creek 31


Val Pfaff had 12 points for the Lady Foxes while Julie Jurasits had 10 points, Savannah Carter 6 points and JoAnna Nowicki had 2 points and 7 rebounds.

In the fifth/sixth grade contest, Nettle Creek won 22-0.

Leona Barton had 11 points and 4 rebounds for the Foxes while Amanda Grant had 4 points and 9 steals.


CROSS LUTHERAN TOURNAMENT

In the fifth/sixth grade tournament, Nettle Creek lost in the championship to Newark 14-10 but they had previously defeated Crossroads 18-8 and Immanuel of Batavia 17-8.

In the championship, Jurak had 4 points and 12 rebounds.

Against Crossroads, Devin Pacheco had 6 points and 9 rebounds, Jessica Jurak 4 points and 22 rebounds and Burton 5 rebounds and 6 steals.

Against Immanuel, Grant had 12 points and 6 steals, Jurak 5 points and 17 rebounds and Burton 7 rebounds and 4 steals.


Sheridan 42,

Newark 30


Newark's 8th grade girls winning streak was stopped at 50 games with the loss to Sheridan.

Alicia Cihak had 8 points and 3 assists and Kelsey Patrick added 6 points and 2 steals.

Newark is 17-1 overall.

Newark at Sandwich Tournament


SANDWICH — Jessica Hagar scored 18 points and added 7 rebounds as Newark (3-4) began its third-place run Friday with a 34-14 thumping of Sterling. Despite 10 points and 5 rebounds from Hagar and 7 points from Kristina Morsovillo, Newark lost its Saturday opener 38-24 to Plano. It then defeated Sandwich 22-12 in the third-place game behind 7 points from Hagar and Morsovillo and 6 from Sara Bogden.


VOLLEYBALL

Ashley Bojovic scored a pair of points for the Hawks in the loss while Lauren Severson added 5 points, 2 aces, 3 assists and a block. Additionally, Maddy Sherlock had 2 kills, Jade Fischer 2 points and 2 kills, Taylor Vandenberg 2 points, an ace and a kill, Amber Chlebek 5 points, an ace and a kill and Angel Putnam 3 points, an ace and 2 assists.

In the seventh grade game, Saratoga won 15-25, 25-14, 25-21.

For the younger Hawks, Taya Torkelson led the way with 12 points, 6 aces, 2 assists, 3 kills and a block and Adrianna Escobedo had an ace and 3 kills. Also, Peighton Shannon had 6 points, 4 aces, 4 assists and a kill, Taylor Cole 6 points and 3 aces, Morgan Spencer 3 points and Amber Misek 4 points, an ace and 2 kills.

Saratoga got 8 points, 3 aces and a kill from Bojovic while Severson added 12 points, 6 aces and 3 assists. Additionally, Sherlock had an assist and 2 kills, Fischer a kill, Vandenberg an assist, Amber Chlebek 7 points, 3 aces and 4 kills, Angel Putnam 1 point, 1 assist and 1 kill, Robbi Hicks 4 points and Jacqueline Murphy an assist.

In the seventh grade contest, Saratoga won 27-25, 25-6, 25-8.

Torkelson had 6 points, 3 aces, 2 assists and a kill, Escobedo had 17 points and 13 aces, Shannon 5 points, 3 aces and an assist, Cole 9 points, 5 aces and a kill, Megan LeBlanc 10 points and 7 aces and Alison Overton a kill.

Terah Coughlin led MVK with 11 points in the contest to help her team improve to 11-2 on the season.

In the seventh grade match, MVK won 25-4, 25-14.

For the Lady Mavericks, Lexi Wilkinson had 13 points and Madison Wyss 11 points. The MVK seventh grade is now 13-0.

In the sixth grade contest, Ransom won 25-17, 17-25, 27-25.

Coal City moved to 9-4 on the season with the loss.

For the Lady Warriors, Emily Halliday had 2 points, 3 kills, 2 assists and 4 digs; Claire Smith 2 kills and a dig; Amber Wilder 4 digs; Britta Spelde 3 points, 2 aces and 3 digs; Kristen Pearcy 6 points, 2 aces, 3 assists and 2 digs; Brittany Jezik a point; Natalie Norris 4 points, an ace and a kill; Abby Polakovic a point; Kassie Aldridge 2 kills and 2 digs; Morgan Leopold 6 points and 6 digs and Taylor Sandeno 3 digs.

Halliday had 8 points, 3 kills, 8 assists and 12 digs while Smith had 5 points, 4 aces and 5 kills. Additionally, Spelde had 5 points, 4 kills, 2 blocks and 3 digs; Pearcy 8 points, 3 aces, 4 kills, 7 assists and 5 digs; Jezik 7 points, 3 kills and 2 digs and Leopold a kill and 3 digs.

Shabbona forfeited eight weight classes in the contest including at Joey Rivera at 65, Taylor Cirrencione at 70, Cody Minnick at 75, Noah Lalumendre at 85, Zach Harris at 126, Malone at 155 and Josh Malinowski at 167.

Also for Coal City: Corey Jurzak won by fall at 80, Casey Brown won by fall at 95, Parker Czaja won by a decision, Thomas Youskevtch won by fall at 105, Riley Kauzlaric by fall at 112, Andrew Mathena by decision at 185 and Joe Floyd by fall at heavyweight.

Taylor Cirrencione also won an exhibition bout.


Coal City at Mahomet Invitational


MAHOMET — Coal City totaled 246 points over the weekend to finish second to only Bloomington. Champion Warriors were Cody Minnick (75), Corey Jurzak (80) and Casey Brown (95).

Second-place Coal City finishes were earned by Joey Rivera (65), Carlos Shoemaker (70), James Harris (135) and Andrew Mathena (185). Josh Malinowski (167) and Matt Marchese (215) finished third, Parker Czaja (100) was fourth, Max Rowell (85) was fifth and Todd LaBuda (90), Riley Kauzlaric (112), Jacob Frost (145) and Brian Harris (155) also earned points.
