PLAINFIELD — Defending a team with high-octane offensive capabilities always is difficult.
But when you don’t really have any idea where that offensive attack might come from, things can become even worse in a team’s defensive efforts.
East Aurora got a hard and long lesson in that dilemma Friday night as Bolingbrook’s wildly varied offensive attack picked apart the Tomcats for an easy 69-28 win in the championship game of the Class 4A Plainfield North Regional.
Bolingbrook (27-6) advances to play in the Oswego Sectional against Andrew at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Bolingbrook and Andrew split a pair of regular-season meetings. East Aurora ended its season with a 17-11 record.
It didn’t take long for the Raiders to demonstrate that they were going to be attacking on all fronts. Led by seven points from Michael Osei-Bonsu, five Raiders scored to allow Bolingbrook to claim a 21-12 lead after the first quarter.

“It’s an unselfish team, and that’s what we preach,” Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost said. “We don’t ever talk about how many points we are going to score or how many wins we are going to have. We just talk about getting better and playing the right way.”
The freewheeling and evenly distributed offense continued in the second quarter, and the Raiders coupled it with a better defensive effort. East Aurora was held scoreless for almost a six-minute stretch in the second quarter. Only a few late baskets kept the Tomcats from being basically shut out in the quarter. Bolingbrook carried a 44-19 lead into the break.
The offensive spigot was almost never shut off for Bolingbrook, but it didn’t have a double-digit scorer until Osei-Bonsu dropped in his ninth and 10th points midway through the third quarter. Daniel Walker joined him a few minutes later and led the Raiders with 12 points, but at times every player on the floor had between six and 10 points for Bolingbrook.
“When we share like we did tonight, its hard to guard us,” Brost said. “Sometimes our shots don’t go in, but today we defended very well and did a good job on both ends of the floor.”

Part of the reason for that was that Bolingbrook was content to using great ball distribution to lead to high-percentage scoring opportunities, and more often than not it converted. Conversely, Bolingbrook’s ability to alter shots in the low block led to a woeful night shooting the ball for the Tomcats, who, despite attempting a litany of 3-pointers, had only one hit the mark.
The four teams in the upcoming sectional round are all teams the Raiders are familiar with. Aside from splitting the two games with Andrew during the regular season, the two teams on the opposite side of the bracket, Oswego East and Neuqua Valley, also were opponents of Bolingbrook. The Raiders lost to Oswego East but defeated Neuqua Valley just before the postseason began.
