STERLING — Sterling Public Schools will make mask wearing optional, Superintendent Tad Everett said in a bulletin issued to parents and students on Sunday night.
In the statement, Everett said the district still recommended that students and staff wear masks.
“Bullying or shaming for wearing masks, or not wearing masks, will not be tolerated,” Everett said. “These situations will be handled swiftly, and could result in discipline.”
The four-page letter sent by Everett to students and parents provided background on the temporary restraining order issued by a Sangamon County Circuit Court judge that nullified the mask requirement set by Gov. JB Pritzker in August.
The letter from Everett cited the last page of Judge Raylene Grischow’s ruling, in which she wrote that the court voided the emergency rules of the Illinois Department of Public Health, then said: “Any non named Plaintiffs and School Districts throughout this State may govern themselves accordingly.” This statement has created confusion and debate, Everett’s letter said.
Everett emphasized that students must still wear masks when on school buses, which are under federal guidelines.
Everett added that co-curricular activities would be the same as instructional activities. However, he said students and staff must still abide by any mask rules required by the host value for any extracurricular events.
In closing, Everett wrote: “I would be lying if I didn’t say that it has been a long and stressful weekend.” He added: “I am asking for students and parents to continue being patient and understanding as we collectively try our best to navigate these latest changes to the COVID-19 guidance and rules for Illinois schools.”
