Mattress 101

Verlo Mattress Factory

Humans need sleep, and over the last 10,000 years, we have found ways to improve our beds. After all, you spend one-third of your life asleep!

The first mattress was created 77,000 years ago in Sibudu Cave in Africa. Researchers discovered a base of layered plant material with grasses and leaves used as bedding. In the 1800s, springs were introduced to offer better support. In the beginning, innerspring mattresses were made with steel coil springs covered in a layer of wool, down, or even horsehair. Over time, more and more padding was added around the coils to make for a more comfortable mattress.

Today, there are many different types of mattresses to choose from.

The innerspring mattress is the oldest type of mattress commonly used today. They are among the most cost efficient mattresses, providing a firmness and support.

Memory foam mattresses are made from a polyurethane foam, providing a quiet bed for people who toss and turn.

An airbed mattress offers customizable support with the ability to increase and decrease the quantity of air to adjust the firmness. Some airbed mattresses offer dual chambers to allow couples to select their own firmness on one half of the bed.

Pillow top mattresses offer an added layer of softness on top of the mattress for a cloud-like feel. This extra comfort layer can offer pressure point relief in the shoulders and hips, but can also feel too soft for people who prefer a more firm bed.

A hybrid mattress is made from more than one type of material and usually has a smooth top non quilted cover. That may include a foam or pocketed coil base with a combination of memory foam, latex foam or poly foam configurations.

Verlo Mattress designs their mattresses to be adjustable and offers a Comfort Guarantee. If your mattress is too firm or too soft, Verlo can perform a Comfort Adjustment service to make your mattress just right for as long as you own the mattress!

At Verlo, each mattress is made to order, so you get to choose the size, style, materials, and features that you want. Verlo can also adjust the comfort of each side separately: soft on one side, firm on the other. At your local Verlo Mattress store, you can build the mattress of your dreams.
