One killed, another injured in Crystal Lake house fire early Sunday

A house fire early Sunday morning in Crystal Lake left one person dead and sent another to the hospital, leaving the home uninhabitable, officials said.

One person was killed and another taken to the hospital as the result of a house fire early Sunday morning in Crystal Lake, the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department said.

The cause of the fire, which was reported at 2:43 a.m. Sunday in the 400 block of Oriole Trail, is currently under investigation, officials with the department said in a news release Sunday.

Fire officials responded within five minutes of the original report, and eventually additional crews were able to search the house, finding one person on the first floor, who officials said was deceased.

Crews had been told that somebody was trapped on the second floor of the home and that person was rescued via ladder, according to the release. That person was taken to the hospital for injuries tied to smoke inhalation.

Nobody else was found during the search, and no firefighters were injured, the department said. Officials also determined that the home’s smoke detectors were working at the time of the fire.

The fire itself was contained around 3:20 a.m., but gusting winds contributed to the fire spreading, causing “extensive damage” to the kitchen and rear porch, according to the release.

The structure was deemed uninhabitable until repairs can be made, with the cost estimated at $125,000, the department said.

The fire is currently under investigation by the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department, the Cary Fire Protection District, fire investigators within the Crystal Lake Police Department, and the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal.
