Junior college volleyball: McHenry County College goes 2-0 on Day 2 of nationals, will play for 9th place

McHenry County College’s women’s volleyball team didn’t drop a set Friday at the NJCAA Division II National Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and will play for ninth place in its final match Saturday.

The No. 9-seeded Scots (26-11) picked up a three-set sweep against No. 16-seeded Montgomery (Maryland), 25-7, 25-17, 25-18, in the consolation bracket quarterfinals and defeated No. 12-seeded North Dakota State College of Science, 25-15, 25-18, 25-22, in the semifinals.

MCC plays No. 7-seeded Scottsdale (Arizona) at 10 a.m. Saturday for ninth place.

The Scots lost their first match of the 16-team tournament Thursday against No. 8-seeded Kirkwood (Iowa) in five sets, placing them into the consolation bracket.

Against Montgomery, Courtney Knutson had a team-high 12 kills and seven aces, Hannah Baudin (Prairie Ridge) had 30 assists, five kills and two aces, and Dana Devera added 11 kills, three aces and eight digs. Skyler Raygoza had four aces.

Against North Dakota State College of Science, Knutson has 13 kills, Devera (seven digs, two aces) and Wilson had eight kills apiece, and Raygoza posted seven kills. Baudin had 31 assists and seven digs, and Kelly Carlson (Crystal Lake South) added 12 digs and three aces.

The Scots are playing in their fourth national tournament in six years.
