Girls basketball: Marengo’s Heinberg named AP Class 2A All-State second team

D-C’s Crenshaw (Class 4A), Burlington Central’s Wells and Charles (3A) earn honorable mention

Marengo’s Jennifer Heinberg added another postseason honor to her name when the senior guard was voted to the Associated Press Class 2A All-State girls basketball second team.

Dundee-Crown senior Alyssa Crenshaw (Class 4A) and Burlington Central senior Elana Wells and junior Taylor Charles (3A) each received honorable mention.

The Class 1A/2A All-State teams were released Monday and the 3A/4A teams Tuesday.

Heinberg previously was named the 2021 Northwest Herald Girls Basketball Player of the Year and appeared on the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Class 2A All-State team. She averaged 18.2 points, six rebounds, 1.7 assists and 2.9 steals a game for the Indians, who won their third straight Kishwaukee River Conference championship.

Heinberg finished her four-year varsity career with the fourth-most points in program history (1,297) and second most 3-pointers (243). She also was named the 2021 KRC Player of the Year.

Crenshaw, who will play next year at St. Xavier University, was named AP All-State honorable mention for the second consecutive season. The forward averaged a double-double at 15.6 points and 10.8 rebounds a game and finished her four-year varsity career with 1,232 points and 894 rebounds.

Wells, who will play at NCAA Division II Indianapolis next year, averaged 17.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists and three steals for the Rockets, who won both the FVC regular-season and conference tournament titles. Charles averaged 10.7 points, 10.3 rebounds and 3.3 blocks a game in her first year at Burlington after transferring from Montini.
