Woodstock North’s Rex White had a game to remember Jan. 19, pouring in a career-high 40 points and knocking down seven 3-pointers to lead the Thunder to a 54-49 win over Byron in their nonconference game.
The Thunder senior guard was clutch with 26 of his 40 points after halftime, including 14 in the fourth quarter in a come-from-behind victory for North.
White was within six points of tying the school’s single-game scoring record of 46 set by Vic Ortiz in 2017, and his seven 3s were the most in a game this season for any area player.
For his memorable performance, White was voted Northwest Herald Athlete of the Week by readers. He answered a few questions about his 40-point explosion, who he models his game after, his funniest teammates and more.
What do you remember most about your 40-point game?
White: My 40-point game was something I will never forget. It was extremely rewarding knowing that hard work and preparation pays off in the end. With that being said, that game never could have happened without the coaching from the [Woodstock North coach Dale] Jandron family and my teammates who trusted me with the ball that night.
Do you model your game after anyone?
White: I grew up a big Kobe Bryant fan. His footwork in the post and midrange is what I try and mimic in my game. I enjoy watching point guards of any level create and facilitate shots for their teammates. I do my best to take what I like, work on it and bring it into any game I’m playing in.
You have next game and can pick any guys in NBA history. What four are running with you?
White: I’m taking the point, Kobe as my shooting guard, Carmelo Anthony [when he was on Denver] as my small forward, LeBron James at power forward and Shaquille O’Neal at center.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
White: Open-mouth chewers.
You just won a million dollars. What’s the first thing you would buy?
White: The first thing I would buy is a yacht for my mom.
Do you have any nicknames?
White: Coach Jandron always says, “REXYYYY.”
What is something that scares you?
White: Losing.
What are three of your favorite movies and/or TV shows?
White: “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” “Shrek” and “Step Brothers.”
Which teammate makes you laugh the most?
White: It’s a tie between Alex Ortiz and Fabio Velasco.
