Richmond-Burton girls soccer team advances to Class 1A supersectional

Margaret Slove and Reese Frericks scored goals, and the Richmond-Burton girls soccer team’s third shutout in as many postseason games resulted in a 2-0 win over host Regina Dominican in the championship game of the Class 1A Cristo Rey St. Martin Sectional on Friday.

The Rockets scored the only goal they needed five minutes into the match, when Slove finished a cross from Frericks. Frericks provided an insurance goal with four minutes to go in the half, taking a pass from Slove and hitting a shot into the lower corner of the net.

Hannah Schlibinger made three saves in earning the shutout.

R-B (14-2-3) advances to the IC Catholic Supersectional and will play Timothy Christian at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Elmhurst.

BOYS TENNIS

IHSA State Tournament: Crystal Lake South junior Jackson Schuetzle will play in the Class 1A third-place match on Saturday morning at Hersey after losing his Friday’s semifinal to 5-8 seed Max Braun of Champaign Centennial, 6-4, 6-0.

Schuetzle, a 3-4 seed, rallied to defeat Wheaton Academy’s Jacob Williams, a 5-8 seed, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. Schuetzle will play No. 1 seed Sujan Garapati of Latin for third place.

Garapati lost his semifinal to Beacon Academy’s Peters Adams Agresti, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2. Agresti, a 3-4 seed, defeated Burlington Central’s Luke Welker, 6-1, 7-6, in the quarterfinals.

Welker rebounded to knock off fellow 5-8 seed Christian Abban of Grayslake North, 6-4, 6-4. Welker will play Wheaton Academy’s Aidan Hilson, a 9-16 seed, in the consolation semifinals at Buffalo Grove on Saturday morning.

Prairie Ridge doubles partners Nathan Kim and Samuel Kim had their season end with a 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 loss to Timothy Christian’s Sammy Valeo/Tommy King in the fourth round of the consolation bracket.

In Class 2A, Jacobs singles players Kyle McNally and Thomas Nelson, a pair of 9-16 seeds, both advanced to Saturday’s 8 a.m. consolation semifinals. McNally (5-1 at state through two days) will play Hinsdale Central’s Noah Hernandez at Hersey on Saturday. In his fifth-round consolation match, McNally rallied to beat Fremd’s Andrew Spurck, 1-6, 7-5, 10-8.

Nelson, who’s also 5-1 after two days, will play Barrington’s Pranav Gadiraju at Hersey.

Jacobs sits in sixth place with 19 points. New Trier is in first with 40 points, six more than second-place Hinsdale Central.

Huntley’s doubles team of Andrew Burkey and Thomas Patel had their season come to an end Friday.

Harvard 54, Belvidere co-op 12: At Belvidere, the Hornets received pins from Marques Merida (126), Aidan Gomez (138), Ivan Rosas (145), Caden Scott (160), Bailey Livdahl (170) and Will Harter (285).

Lena Winslow 59, Harvard 18: At Belvidere, Bryce Fiegel (132), Nathan Rosas (220) and Will Harter (285) had the Hornets’ lone three wins, all by pin.

Harvard’s two matches at Belvidere North completed its regular season.
